Spazio Nuovo is a contemporary art gallery with locations in Rome and Amsterdam. For its Rome gallery, located near Piazza Navona, the client asked us to develop a project that would enhance the functionality of the exhibition spaces while creating a strong visual identity. In response to this brief, our intervention began with the removal of the pre-existing lighting system to overcome the perceptual fragmentation of the space. A single, multifunctional folded sheet metal element was then installed on the ceiling along the gallery's main axis. This system integrates a dual lighting function, combining indirect light from an LED strip with direct light from adjustable spotlights on a track, thus ensuring maximum exhibition flexibility. At the same time, this element defines a strong perspective axis that accentuates the room's depth and organizes its composition. The project is completed by highlighting the original structural portals, whose rhythm divides the space into three bays and generates six lateral niches ideal for the display of artworks.
The resulting space feels strong and distinctive: each artwork is framed and enhanced within a spatial niche, and the lighting can be both direct and indirect, depending on the gallery's needs and the organization of the space.
